The meeting was called to order by President Bruce Sorensen. Debra Briggs gave devotions regarding “humility” and related to Ephesians, chapter 11. Motion to approve the June Council meeting minutes was made by Tom Gruss and seconded by Rick Keller. Motion approved. Sandi Joubert presented the paperwork for the applicants for the “Community Gardens”. The signage has been ordered and should be in place this week. Donations have been received to help sponsor five plots.
Treasurers Report: Thank you to the congregation for their continued monetary support of Peace Lutheran! Tom Gruss moved to suspend the transfer of rental fees from the General Fund to the Building Fund for two months (July and August). John Gillis seconded, motion approved. Vickie Streich moved to pay Vern Albertson for his substitute custodial hours while Bob White was on vacation, Debra Briggs seconded, motion approved. John Gillis moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report, Bob Coughlin seconded, motion approved.
Pastors Report: Pastor Bill is providing pre-marital counseling services and marital counseling to couples. Pastor Bill will be going to Townsend on July 11 to provide ministerial services for the LCMC congregation. He reported that approximately 20 people attended his service there in June and he feels that there are approximately 40 people that potentially will be attending. People from White Sulphur Springs have been driving the 43 miles to Townsend to attend LCMC services at the Rod & Gun Club. The congregants from Townsend have expressed interest in attending the picnic that will be held at the Sorensen’s on August 21.
Youth Report: No report.
Team (Committee) Reports:
- Education/Youth & Family: Vacation Bible School went very well ~ they planned on 50 children and 54 pre-registered. 4 children did not show up, so the plans for 50 were adequate. Curriculums will be reviewed for Sunday School.
- Stewardship: Bruce Sorensen will be raffling two quarters of beef. The proceeds will be placed in the General fund. The tickets will be sold for $2.00 each, with the drawing held on September 12. You must be present to win. The Endowment fund interest will need to be looked at for distribution.
- Worship and Music: Services are set for July & August. The committee will meet again in August.
- Property Care: Rick Keller checked with Bangtail Bikes regarding sheds they have for sale. They will not donate one to the church. They are asking $700 for one that needs roof repairs or $1000 for a newer shed with a loft. Rick Keller and Tom Gruss will investigate further to see about moving costs. Rick Keller will be meeting with Andy Mitchell from Andy’s Glass to see about replacing the doors of PLC. John Gillis has received a donation of 300’ of chain link fencing that will be installed near the sidewalk to the north of PLC. The Council decided to cut the existing playground fence down to 6 feet and the fence company will “finish” the top of that existing fencing.
- Membership, Evangelism and Outreach: The potluck at the end of VBS was a good ending to a great week. Parents supported afternoon VBS. Questions regarding the “do-ability” of Manic Monday lunches. If the lunches continue, someone will need to be the team leader.
- Congregational Life: Rally Day will strictly be for Sunday School, without the small group tables involved as in past years. Further discussion regarding the new PLC directory. Lance Sorensen will possibly be available to take family photos for the directory. Due to copyright laws, we would not be able to re-print the photos used in the previous directory.
- Old Business:
- Constitution/bylaws still in flux, the committee needs to meet.
- NOTE TIME CHANGE: The church potluck picnic will be held on August 21 at the Sorensen’s beginning at 5:00pm.
- New Business:
- Rick Keller moved to limit benevolence from PLC to the 6 organizations recommended by the benevolence committee, Tom Gruss seconded, motion approved. John Gillis feels strongly that PLC needs to strive to increase our benevolence giving to 10%.
- On July 13 at 7:00pm, there will be an Inter-Varsity presentation given by Elizabeth Coughlin at 504 Minnesota Street.
- Once a month, there will be cups passed during PLC’s offering to benefit the Backpack Buddy program sponsored by the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. Currently, Heck/Quaw Elementary participates in this program and 103 students in grades 1-3 receive food for the weekends during the school year.
- Staff concerns will be added to the monthly Council agenda.
Other Business:
- July Ministry team – Kris Bell, Debra Briggs, DeAnne Smith
- Council meeting – Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 7:00pm
- August Council meeting devotions: Bob Coughlin
Bruce Sorensen ended the meeting by reading Luke 9: 61, 62. Motion to dismiss the meeting was made by Rick Keller and seconded by John Gillis. Motion carried.
The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Vickie Streich
