PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL – December 11, 2008
Present: Gretchen Carrels, Pastor Duffey, Tom Gruss, Rip Harber, Paul Joubert, Mike Streich, Diane Oddy, Joel Peterson and Bill Roesener.
Absent: Mike Koosman, Val Ross and Bud Ray.
Devotions led by Pastor Duffey.
President Gretchen Carrels called the council meeting to order at 7:10PM.
Congregational concerns: The church received a copy of the synod’s endorsement of Tara as a candidate for ordained ministry.
There was some discussion regarding the proper address to send the funds collected for the sheriff chaplain’s program.
The potluck for the annual meeting will be the opposite sign-up from previous years. (A to L=side dish and M to Z=dessert).
Treasurer’s report: The report was discussed and approved as presented. Dennis had a comment about the many offers for yellow page ads sent to the church. He advised caution as the ads are expensive and the church probably doesn’t need to be in all the phone books.
The 2009 church budget was discussed and Dennis will prepare for presentation to the membership at the January annual meeting.
Secretary’s report: The minutes of the November meeting were approved as presented.
Pastor’s report: Pastor has no specific concerns for the council.
Committee reports –
-Education: The children’s Christmas program is this Sunday at the second service. Gretchen Carrels will assume the role of Sunday School Superintendent after her duties on the council are done.
-Stewardship: No report
-Worship and music: The January services have been planned.
-Property care: The carpet cleaners will return on Friday to re-do several areas in the entry way and stairs. Glyn Ross is leading a project to put a new metal railing along the sides of the new walk-way. Andy Mitchell is donating shower doors and a new mirror for the fellowship bathrooms. We will be buying 2 new vacuum cleaners.
-Membership: No report
-Congregational life: There was a meeting to facilitate a smooth transition of committee duties, as 2 members will be going off the council.
-Youth: There are several seasonal activities in the works for the Peace Lutheran youth. Over ½ of the necessary monies have been raised for the New Orleans trip this spring (lefse fund raiser, Bobcat-Grizzly sign fund raiser). Thrivent has provided matching funds. The current number of young people planning to go to New Orleans is 37, counting youth from other area Lutheran churches. The young people of the congregation would like to paint the ‘youth room’ and the council approved.
New Business: There was a discussion about the nominating committee for council vacancies for 2009. Gretchen will try to resolve this need. Tom Gruss agreed to remain on the council for 2 more years. Therefore three new members will be needed to fill the vacancies. There was also some discussion about the need for an audit committee and pastoral support committee.
Future dates: next meeting January 8th
Annual meeting January 25th
January devotions: Gretchen
January worship/counters: Team 3
